Introduction

1. Standard Overview

GB/T 8358-2023 "Method for Determination of Breaking Tensile Force of Steel Wire Rope" is the latest steel wire rope testing standard in my country, replacing the old version GB/T 8358-2014. This standard revision adopts the international standard ISO 3108:2017, and has made a number of technical improvements and supplements in combination with my country's national conditions.

2. Background of Standard Revision

Since its first release in 1987, this standard has been revised three times. : The main purposes of this revision are:

  • Adapt to the technological development needs of the wire rope industry at home and abroad
  • Improve the scientificity and operability of the test methods
  • Add green and environmentally friendly sample preparation methods (such as grouting material pouring method)
  • Optimize the test equipment requirements and safety protection measures

3. Standard Framework Comparison Table

Standard Dimensions GB/T 8358-2014 ISO 3108:2017 GB/T 8358-2023
Scope of Application Applicable only to specific wire rope types General wire rope test methods Comprehensive coverage of all wire rope types
Sample preparation methods Alloy casting method, resin casting method Casing pressing method, direct clamping method New grouting material casting method, supplementary green and environmentally friendly options
Technical requirements No clear equipment calibration specifications Testing machine accuracy requirements are unclear New equipment calibration and safety protection requirements

4. Interpretation of the core content of the standard

4.1 Definition of terms

The standard has added a number of new term definitions, including:

  • Minimum Breaking Force: the lower limit of the measured breaking force.
  • Grouting Material Pouring Method: A green and environmentally friendly sample preparation method, suitable for steel wire ropes with a diameter of no more than 20mm.
  • Direct Gripping Method: A test method in which the sample is directly mounted on the jaws of the testing machine, suitable for single-strand steel wire ropes.

4.2 Sample Preparation Requirements

The standard puts forward more stringent requirements for sample preparation:

  • Bundling Material: It is recommended to use low-carbon steel wire to avoid affecting the test results due to improper material selection.
  • Minimum Effective Test Section Length: Adjust according to the diameter of the steel wire rope to ensure the accuracy of the test data.
  • Casting Requirements: Increase the requirements for casting length and material strength to improve the detection accuracy.

4.3 Test Equipment and Safety

The standard adds detailed requirements for test equipment:

  • Force measurement system calibration: The force measurement system of the test machine must comply with the requirements of GB/T 16825.1 to ensure test accuracy.
  • Safety protection device: The test machine must be equipped with safety protection measures to prevent the wire rope from breaking and splashing and injuring people.
  • Equipment maintenance: Regularly calibrate and maintain the test equipment to ensure long-term stability.

5. Implementation suggestions

5.1 Enterprise application suggestions

For wire rope manufacturers:

  • Establish a standard test laboratory and equip it with test equipment that meets the requirements.
  • Train professional testers to master the technical details of the new version of the standard.
  • Optimize the production process to ensure that the sample preparation meets the requirements of the specification.

5.2 Recommendations for third-party testing agencies

For third-party testing agencies:

  • Update existing testing equipment and methods to ensure consistency with the new version of the standard.
  • Develop new testing capabilities (such as grouting method) to meet market demand.
  • Establish a long-term monitoring mechanism to track changes in the performance of wire rope products.

5.3 Recommendations for users

For wire rope users:

  • Select and test wire rope products in strict accordance with standard requirements.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain wire rope equipment to prevent safety accidents caused by fatigue or damage.
  • Maintain communication with suppliers to ensure that purchased products meet the latest technical requirements.
