Scope
Warning: Potassium dichromate, mercury, and their compounds are highly toxic. When handling them, enhanced ventilation should be ensured, and operators must wear protective equipment to avoid contact with skin and clothing.
This standard specifies the cold atomic absorption spectrophotometry method for determining total mercury in water.
The standard is applicable for measuring total mercury in surface water, groundwater, industrial wastewater, and domestic sewage. If the organic matter content is high, this standard's specified maximum amount of digestion reagents may be insufficient to oxidize the organic matter in the sample; in such cases, this standard does not apply.
When a sample volume of 100 ml is used, the detection limit is 0.02 ?g/L and the determination lower limit is 0.08 ?g/L using potassium permanganate-peroxodisulfuric acid digestion or potassium bromate-bromide digestion methods; for a sample volume of 200 ml, the detection limit is 0.01?g/L, and the determination lower limit is 0.04?g/L. When using microwave digestion with a sample volume of 25 ml, the detection limit is 0.06 ?g/L and the determination lower limit is 0.24 ?g/L.
