Introduction

The industry standard NB/SH/T 0975-2018, titled "Determination of the Tendency of Lacquer Formation in In-Service Turbine Oils by Membrane Patch Colorimetry (MPC Method)," was issued on October 29, 2018, and came into effect on March 1, 2019. This standard specifies a method for assessing the potential of turbine oils to form lacquer deposits during operation, which is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of turbine systems.

The Membrane Patch Colorimetry (MPC) method described in this standard involves passing a sample of in-service turbine oil through a membrane filter. The filter captures any insoluble contaminants and degradation products present in the oil. The color of the membrane patch is then analyzed to determine the tendency of the oil to form lacquer. This method provides a quantitative measure of the oil's condition, helping to predict potential issues before they lead to equipment failure.

By using the MPC method, maintenance personnel can monitor the health of turbine oils more effectively, ensuring that the oils remain within acceptable performance limits. This standard is particularly important for industries relying on turbine systems, such as power generation and aviation, where oil degradation can lead to significant operational disruptions and costly repairs.
