Interpretation of the core content of the standard

QX/T 239-2014 standard establishes a two-level classification system for geomagnetic activity:

Analysis of key technical indicators

K index measurement specification

The disturbance amplitude of the horizontal component (H) or magnetic declination (D) is measured by the fluxgate magnetometer. The algorithm needs to exclude baseline drift and artificial interference. Typical application cases:

  • In March 2017, the Beijing station recorded a K=7 strong disturbance event, corresponding to the geomagnetic storm warning
  • Verification of the stability of the K index during the polar night at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica

Principle of Kp index calculation

Using global station network data, it is latitude corrected and standardized. Historical data shows:

Frequency of Kp≥5 Year of solar maximum: 15-20 days/year Year of solar minimum: 3-5 days/year

Recommendations for standard implementation

Monitoring system construction

It is recommended to configure GM-4 magnetometer + data acquisition system, with a sampling rate ≥0.1Hz, and regularly perform the following:

  1. Instrument absolute calibration (annual cycle)
  2. Baseline value review (monthly cycle)
  3. Data quality cross-validation

Business application scenarios

When Kp≥6, the following should be started:

  • Satellite orbit correction plan
  • Geomagnetic Induction Current (GIC) monitoring of power systems
  • Suggestions for adjustment of shortwave communication frequency bands

Technology evolution analysis

Compared with the original classification scheme proposed by Mayaud in 1980, this standard has the following major improvements:

  • Added data interface specifications for digital magnetometers
  • Specified special processing algorithms for polar stations
  • Established a mapping relationship with the NASA OMNI database
