Introduction

Standard Overview and Technical Background

QX/T 371-2017 specifies the analysis method of the 500 hPa potential height field for monitoring blocking high pressure, filling the gap in the standard for monitoring persistent circulation anomalies in my country. The standard is based on the latest research results of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on blocking high pressure and is formulated in combination with the observation data of the National Climate Center of my country in the past 20 years.

Analysis of core monitoring indicators

Indicator type Northern Hemisphere parameters Southern Hemisphere parameters Calculation method
Altitude gradient GHGS>0, GHGN<-10gpm/° GHGS>0, GHGN<-10gpm/° Formula (1)-(7)
Spatial requirements Continuous ≥12.5° longitude Continuous ≥12.5° longitude 5 grid points
Duration ≥5 days (1 day of interruption allowed) Appendix A

Key Technology Implementation

Data Preprocessing Requirements

The standard explicitly requires the use of 2.5°×2.5° or higher resolution grid data, and must be processed with a 5-day sliding average. For example, in the analysis of the northern hemisphere blocking event in June 2010, downscaling was required when using ECMWF's 0.25° high-resolution data.

Intensity quantification method

The standardized intensity index is calculated by equations (11)-(12):
I = 100×(Hc - Havg)/Havg
where Hc is the central potential height and Havg is the average value of upstream and downstream. In the case of East Asian blocking high in July 2012, the intensity was measured to be 35%, resulting in continuous heavy rains in the Yangtze River Basin.

Implementation recommendations

  1. Data quality control: It is recommended to integrate reanalysis data (such as ERA5) with real-time observation data
  2. Automated discrimination: Develop an automatic tracking algorithm for spatiotemporal continuity based on Chapter 5 of the standard
  3. Forecast application: Incorporate blocking index into the extended-range forecast model, referring to the 72-hour warning case of the European blocking event in 2013

Standard evolution direction

Compared with the 2007 trial method, the main improvements of this standard include:
1. Increase applicability to the southern hemisphere (Article 4.2.2)
2. Refine the rules for handling intermittent blocking (Article 5.1c)
3. Introduce standardized intensity indicators (Article 5.3)
Future revisions should considerHigh Resolution Mode outputs data for direct application needs.
