《中国河流代码》（SL 249-2012）在原有标准《中国河流名称代码》（SL 249-1999）基础上，进行了以下几方面的修订：
1、将标准名称由“中国河流名称代码”更改为“中国河流代码”。
2、修改了编码河流的入选标准，调整了河流代码编码原则，扩充了编码河流的数量。
3、按照国家测绘局1:25万水系图和国家测绘局1:5万水系图为基础，补充了2000余条河流。
4、增加了反映河流汇流关系的列表，明确编码河流的上级河流（或注入的湖泊）及对应的编码。
5、修改和增加了部分术语。
Scope
This standard stipulates the codes for rivers with a drainage area greater than 500km² or a length greater than 30km across the country, as well as rivers where large and important medium-sized reservoirs and sluices are located. This standard applies to the management and application of river information preparation, storage, retrieval and other fields in water conservancy departments across the country.
