Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

This standard uses inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine the content of uranium (238U) and thorium (232Th) in food. The detection limit of the method is 0.025mg/kg, covering major food categories such as grains, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, shrimp and dairy products.

Method Validation Data

Validation across seven matrices showed uranium recoveries of 86.2%-120.0% and thorium recoveries of 80.6%-121.1%. The higher uranium recovery in the milk powder matrix may be due to organic interference; increasing the digestion time is recommended.


Recommendations for Standard Implementation

  1. Collision cell parameters for different brands of ICP-MS need to be optimized to eliminate polyatomic interferences
  2. It is recommended to add a pre-digestion step for high-fat samples
  3. Matrix-matched standards should be included in each batch of testing

Analysis of Technological Evolution

Compared to traditional α-spectroscopy, ICP-MS reduces analysis time from 7 days to 2 hours, increasing throughput by 20-fold. The 2016 version of the standard added a bismuth internal standard system, significantly improving long-term stability (RSD <5%).
