Scope

A ventilation duct system has the potential to convey smoke, hot gases, and flames from one area to another, or it may supply air to a fire zone to aid combustion. For these reasons, the fire-resistance properties of a ductwork system are essential for life safety and property protection. Therefore, a complete fire-resistant ductwork system itself can be part of the building's fire protection system (see 1.4). Scope This standard applies to all ventilation systems in buildings as follows: a) Spaces with volumes exceeding 707.9 m³ (25,000 ft³). b) Buildings classified as III, IV, or V regardless of volume when they exceed three stories vertically. c) Structures and spaces not covered by other applicable NFPA standards. d) Occupants or processes not addressed by other applicable NFPA standards. Purpose This standard specifies the minimum requirements for protecting life and property during a fire. These requirements aim to achieve the following: a) Limiting smoke spread within buildings through ductwork, or entry into buildings from outside. b) Controlling ignition sources spreading fires via ductwork from the point of origin (inside or outside the building). c) Maintaining the structural integrity and components' fire-resistance properties of the building. Avoid installing ducts in a way that impacts floor, wall, roof, composite walls/ceilings integrity. d) Minimizing flammability of ignition sources and components within duct systems. e) Allowing ductwork systems in buildings to be used for emergency smoke control. This standard is not limited to the use of new methods or designs. When new methods and designs are employed, sufficient technical data should be provided to the authorities having jurisdiction for approval, demonstrating that the proposed method or design meets equivalent quality, strength, durability, and safety standards as specified herein. The provisions of this standard have no retroactive effect. When a system is modified, expanded, or repaired, these requirements apply only to the current work being done. *Smoke control* *Maintenance (retain)*
