Introduction

Standard Background and Significance

As the basic standard for the digitization of ancient books, WH/T91-2020 systematically stipulates the technical specifications of Ideographic Description Characters (IDC) and Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) for the first time. The standard is based on Unicode 12.0 and clearly defines the encoding positions of 12 IDC characters (U+2FF0 to U+2FFB).

Core Terms Definition

Term Full English Name Definition
IDS Ideographic Description Sequence A sequence of Chinese character structure descriptions formed by the combination of IDC characters
IDC Ideographic Description Characters 12 special characters used to describe the relationship between Chinese character components
Gaiji Japanese for "rare character" Specifically refers to difficult characters and variant characters that appear in ancient books

Analysis of IDC Character Functions

The standard divides 12 IDC characters into three categories of functions:

  1. Basic combining characters (10): including ⿰(U+2FF0), ⿱(U+2FF1), ⿴(U+2FF4), etc., used to describe common Chinese character structural relationships
  2. Mirror combining characters (2): ⿲(U+2FF2) and ⿳(U+2FF3), used to handle special mirror structures
  3. Placeholder: "?"(U+FF1F) is used to represent unknown components

Typical case: The character "明" can be represented as ⿰日月, where ⿰ represents the left-right structural relationship.

IDS construction rules

Chapter 4 of the standard specifies the construction method of the IDS sequence in detail:

  • The basic structure description shall not exceed 3 levels of nesting
  • The mirror structure must use special characters
  • Complex structures can use temporary encoding (U+FFFF0 to U+FFFF3)

Implementation suggestions

According to the requirements of Chapter 7 of the standard, the following should be noted when digitizing ancient books:

  1. Basic combination characters should be used to describe regular structures
  2. Decomposition description should be used for nested structures with more than three levels
  3. Difficult characters should be processed in conjunction with Unicode extension area encoding

Special case: For the character "龜", it is recommended to use the multi-layer description method of ⿳⿰⿱⿰丨一⿰丨一⿰⿰⿱⿰丨一⿰丨一⿰⿰⿱⿰丨一⿰丨一⿰⿰⿱⿰丨一⿰丨一⿰.
