Introduction

Standard Overview and Technical Background

WS521-2017 is a quality control test specification developed in my country for medical digital radiography (DR) systems, replacing the testing standards for traditional X-ray machines. This standard is based on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61223 series of standards and incorporates the specific clinical application characteristics of DR equipment in my country.

Key Technological Innovations

1. Dynamic Range Test: The DR system is required to maintain a linear response (R²≥0.98) within the dose range of 1-30μGy, a 3% improvement over the 0.95 requirement of traditional equipment.

2. Spatial Resolution Test: Using Nyquist frequency evaluation, the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is required to be ≥80% at ≥5lp/mm.

3. Automatic Exposure Control (AEC): Three new operating mode tests are added, with the error required to be controlled within ±25%.


Implementation Recommendations

  1. During the acceptance of new equipment, all 18 basic tests should be completed according to Appendix A.
  2. Quarterly maintenance focuses on testing six core indicators, including DDI, STP, and uniformity
  3. It is recommended to use dedicated test phantoms such as CDRAD2.0 or DIGI-13
  4. Establish an electronic archive of test data to implement trend analysis and early warning

Technology Evolution Analysis

Compared with the 2010 version of the standard, WS521-2017 has the following major improvements:

  • Added Flat Panel Detector firmware version compatibility test
  • Included AEC response time as a mandatory test item
  • Introduced the DICOM GSDF standard for display consistency evaluation
