本标准规定了基于ATM方式的不对称数字用户线（ADSL）用户端设备的接口、性能、功能、协议和维护管理等要求。基于分组（Packet）方式的ADSL用户端设备不在本标准规定范围内。本标准规定了两种工作模式：全速率模式（又称ADSL Full Rate或G.DMT）和低速率模式（又称ADSL Lite或G.Lite）。在一根双绞线上同时支持ISDN和ADSL的用户端设备不在本标准规定范围内。支持VoDSL的用户端设备不在本标准范围内。本标准适用于公用电信网的ADSL用户端设备，也可供专用电信网参考使用。
