Since ICANN opened new generic top-level domain (gTLD) applications in 2012, the global domain name system has entered a diversified development stage. As an important part of a series of technical specifications, this standard aims to unify the format and content requirements for the monthly operational data submitted by registries to ICANN. Its technological evolution presents three notable features:
- Data granularity is refined: from early simple statistics to 41 transaction indicators and 39 activity indicators
- Timeliness is strengthened: the UTC time cutoff data at the end of the month is explicitly required
- Technical interface standardization: using HTTPS protocol to interact with specific API endpoints
