Scope

This standard applies to the interconnection between data terminal equipment (DTE) and automatic calling equipment (ACE) used for data communication. This standard specifies: --Electrical signal characteristics Interchange signal and electrical characteristics of related circuits --Interface mechanical characteristics Definition of mechanical characteristics between DTE and ACE. --Functional description of the interchange circuit A functional description of a set of digital and control interchange circuits used on the digital interface between DTE and ACE. --The standard interface is a standard subset of the special interchange circuit determined by the ACE category described in 1.3. In addition, this standard also includes: --Suggestions and notes. This standard can be applied to ACE used together with DTE. This standard provides optional interface types for various ACE operations as described below. In the case of an automatic call, the called number is stored in the ACE. In the case of automatic calling, the called number is sent to ACE via DTE. In the case of an automatic call, the ACE can be used both for the original call and for the transmission of data to another data circuit terminating equipment (DCE). In the case of automatic calling, several DCEs share one ACE. This standard is independent of the technology used to convey information over the communication channel via ACE, and applies equally to pulse autodialing and multi-tone keystrokes. This standard allows two methods of transferring channel control from ACE to DCE (see clause 6.2). This standard has nothing to do with the data rate, transmission mode (synchronous or asynchronous), modulation technology, error control technology and line control procedures in related systems.
