Introduction
GB/T 1815—2019 Standard Overview
GB/T 1815—2019 "Determination of Bromine Value and Bromine Index of Benzene Products" is a national standard of the People's Republic of China, which is used to regulate the determination method of bromine value and bromine index in benzene products. This standard replaces the previous GB/T1815—1997 version, mainly adding warning clauses, expanding the scope of application, and introducing new determination methods.
Standard Background and Technological Evolution
Bromine value and bromine index are important indicators for measuring the content of unsaturated hydrocarbons in benzene products. With the development of oil refining technology, especially the application of catalytic reforming technology, the quality requirements for benzene products are increasing. The revision of this standard fully considers the needs of modern industry, optimizes the determination method, and adds the electrochemical determination method of bromine index.
Comparison of standard frameworks
| Standard dimensions | 1997 edition | 2019 edition |
|---|---|---|
| Scope of application | Only applicable to coking benzene, coking toluene, etc. | Add benzene products produced by catalytic reforming process of petroleum fractions |
| Determination method | Bromine value titration method | Bromine value titration method + coulometric method (Appendix A) |
| Accuracy requirements | No clear requirements | Repeatability ≤0.02g/100mL, reproducibility ≤0.02g/100mL |
Determination of Bromine Value and Bromine Index
Principle of Titration
In an acidic medium, unsaturated hydrocarbons in benzene products react with bromine. Excess bromine reacts with potassium iodide to generate iodine, which is then titrated to the endpoint with sodium thiosulfate. The bromine value or bromine index of the sample is determined by calculating the amount of bromine consumed.
Principle of Coulometric Method
The sample is injected into a bromine-containing electrolyte, and the unsaturated hydrocarbons react with bromine, and the consumed bromine is replenished by electrolysis. The bromine index is calculated using Faraday's law by measuring the amount of electricity required for electrolysis.
Instrument Specifications
- Burette: 5mL, graduation value 0.02mL
- Microcoulometric titrator: suitable for the bromine index determination coulometric method
- Oscillator: horizontal vibration distance 100mm, frequency about 150 times/min
- Electronic analytical balance: sensitivity 0.1mg
Implementation Suggestions
- Operators should receive professional training and be familiar with standard requirements and instruments.
- The laboratory should be equipped with instruments that meet the requirements and calibrated regularly.
- Blank tests and result records should be done during the determination.
- For the determination of bromine index, it is recommended to give priority to the coulometric method to improve accuracy.
