Scope

This standard specifies requirements for stress relief of high-strength steels in order to reduce the susceptibility or degree of susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement during subsequent pretreatment, electroplating, electroless plating, chemical conversion and phosphating. This standard applies to steels that are heat-treated at temperatures between 190°C and 230°C or higher without degrading their properties (see 6.2). The heat treatment procedures specified in this standard are effective for reducing the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement of steels with a tensile strength equal to or higher than 1 000 Mpa that have been machined, ground, cold formed or cold straightened after heat treatment. This heat treatment process is used before any process where hydrogen bleed into the part may occur, just as cleaning processes are used before electroplating, electroless plating, and other chemical coating operations. This standard does not apply to fasteners.
