Standard background and technical evolution analysis

GB/T 21183-2017 replaces the old version GB/T 21183-2007, and has been comprehensively revised mainly for the technical requirements of zirconium and zirconium alloy plates, strips and foils. The new version of the standard has important improvements in product classification, chemical composition, dimensional tolerances and mechanical properties to meet the higher demands of modern industry and nuclear industry.


Product Classification and Brands

The product brands of zirconium and zirconium alloy plates, strips and foils are divided into two categories: general industry and nuclear industry, as follows:

Comparative Analysis of Dimensions and Allowable Deviations

The allowable deviations of thickness, width and length vary significantly in different versions of the standard. The following is a comparison of key data:

Mechanical properties and corrosion requirements

Plates for nuclear industry need to meet higher mechanical properties. Typical data are as follows:

  • Tensile strength Rm ≥ 400 MPa
  • Specified plastic extension strength Rp0.2 ≥ 240 MPa
  • Elongation after fracture A50mm ≥ 25%

Ultrasonic inspection and grain size requirements

Plate for nuclear industry shall be ultrasonically inspected to ensure that there are no internal defects. In terms of grain size, the average grain size of products with a thickness of ≤4.8mm shall reach Grade 7 or higher in GB/T6394.

Implementation suggestions

  1. Quality control:Chemical composition, dimensions and mechanical properties shall be strictly inspected in accordance with the standards to ensure that the products meet the contract requirements.
  2. Inspection method:GB/T228.1 and GB/T228.2 shall be used for tensile tests, and GB/T6394 shall be used for grain size rating.
  3. Surface treatment:Pay attention to keep the product surface smooth and clean to avoid oxidation and corrosion, especially the foil shall meet strict roughness requirements (Ra ≤1.25 μm).
