Introduction

Background of Standard Revision and Technological Evolution

GB/T26907-2025 "Quality Grading of Camellia Oil Seedlings" is the first revision of the 2011 version of the standard, reflecting the continuous deepening of standardization work in my country's camellia oil industry. This revision is based on the technological progress of camellia oil breeding and the needs of industrial development, and systematically optimizes the seedling classification system, quality indicators and testing methods.

Reconstruction of the terminology definition system

The new version of the standard has made major adjustments to the terminology system: it has deleted the definitions of basic terms such as seedling age and ground diameter, retained and improved the definitions of large roots and grafted seedlings, and added clear definitions of camellia oil, camellia oil seedlings and bare-root seedlings. This adjustment reflects the specialized focus on the applicable objects of the standard and avoids duplicate definitions with general forestry standards.

Seedling classification and grade index system

Bare-root seedling quality grading

The new version of the standard further refines the classification of bare-root seedlings, adds the type of 2-year-old cuttings, and revises the grade index of 2-year-old grafted seedlings. In particular, the key indicator of the number of level I lateral roots ≥5cm long has been added to strengthen the quantitative requirements of root quality.

IndicatorsRequirements for Grade I seedlingsRequirements for Grade II seedlingsTest methods
Ground diameter (cm)≥0.40≥0.30Measured with vernier caliper
Seedling height (cm)≥40≥30Measured with a steel tape measure
Number of lateral roots (roots)≥6≥5Visual inspection
Lateral root length (cm)≥15≥10Measurement with a steel tape

Container seedling quality grading

The container seedling classification system has been significantly expanded to include two-year-old and three-year-old container seedlings, including two-year-old cutting container seedlings, two-year-old grafted container seedlings, and three-year-old grafted container seedlings. At the same time, the container specification requirements corresponding to different seedling ages have been clarified, forming a complete container seedling quality standard system. Chapter 6 of the standard details the testing methods for various indicators: seedling height is measured to an accuracy of 1 cm, ground diameter is measured to an accuracy of 0.05 cm, branch count is performed using direct counting, and root system indicators utilize a combination of visual inspection and measurement. This grading precision ensures the scientific and practical nature of the quality evaluation. The new standard adds systematic determination rules (Clause 7.4), clearly stipulating that bare-root seedlings must meet the corresponding grade requirements for root system, seedling height, and ground diameter. Container seedlings must meet the requirements for container size, seedling height, ground diameter, and branch number. It also specifies the criteria for determining unqualified seedlings and the acceptance criteria for batch inspection (the percentage of non-compliance should not exceed 5%).

Packaging, Transportation, and Quality Traceability

The standard requires bare-root seedlings to be bundled in groups of 50 or 100, and container seedlings to be packaged in woven bags or plastic baskets. It also standardizes the format requirements for seedling quality inspection certificates and labels, establishing a quality traceability system from production to distribution.

Implementation Recommendations and Application Guidance

Key Points for Implementation in the Production Phase

Seedling nurseries should focus on: 1) Strictly select seedling containers according to the container specifications required by the standard; 2) Strengthen root cultivation to ensure that the number of Level I lateral roots meets the standard; 3) Establish a standardized quality self-inspection system and regularly test key indicators such as ground diameter and seedling height.

Precautions in the Distribution Phase

Notes on seedling distribution: 1) Promptly grade seedlings after transplanting; 2) Avoid root damage during packaging; 3) Protect against prolonged stacking and exposure to wind and sun during transportation; 4) Include standardized quality inspection certificates and labels with shipments.

Key Technical Points for Supervision and Testing

Quality supervision agencies should: 1) be equipped with testing equipment that meets the required accuracy; 2) master standardized testing methods; 3) establish standardized sampling and determination procedures; and 4) strengthen testing capabilities for newly added indicators (such as the number of lateral roots).

Expected Benefits of Standard Implementation

The implementation of GB/T26907-2025 will significantly improve the standardization of oil tea seedling quality in my country. Through unified quality grading standards, it will promote the production and circulation of high-quality seedlings, providing seedling guarantees for the high-quality development of the oil tea industry. It is expected that after implementation, the survival rate of oil tea afforestation will increase by more than 15%, and early yields will increase by approximately 20%.
