Scope

This standard specifies the steam chemistry to be used in steam turbines to prevent corrosion and fouling of the steam passages and to minimize the risk of turbine corrosion, loss of efficiency, or loss of output power. This standard applies to condensing or back pressure steam turbines for power generation with rated power. However, the applicability of the rated power or steam pressure is limited by economic factors such as the relative cost of monitoring devices and steam turbine equipment. This standard is prepared for new units, but is also applicable to existing units. The limit values presented in this standard are specially designed for the protection of steam turbines. Users should also be aware of the effect of other equipment, such as boilers or steam generators, on steam purity. This standard applies to steam turbines driven by any steam source other than geothermal sources. After initial start-up, it may take several months for a steam turbine to reach its optimum chemistry. Some parameters (sodium, cation conductivity) reach their optimum faster than others (silica, iron, copper). Therefore, the normal target value of steam parameters may be difficult to achieve during commissioning, but will gradually improve with the improvement of steam quality. Appendix A lists recommended guidelines for this standard and methods for verifying the chemical purity of the steam entering the turbine to assure the integrity and efficiency of the turbine. The limit values presented are not mandatory and can be used as the basis for on-site guidance for individual crews. Validation is carried out by selecting appropriate sampling locations and measuring parameters continuously or intermittently.
