Scope
This document details how to specify conducted disturbance protection devices for HEMP protection. The purpose of this document is to ensure consistency with existing or future specifications issued by manufacturers of protective devices, electronic equipment manufacturers, official bodies, and other end users. Performance requirements for protective devices will be given in subsequent national standards. This document covers current protective devices for protection against HEMP transients on signal lines and low-voltage power lines (nominal voltages up to 1 kV AC). General information on protective devices also applies to high-voltage lines. However, in these cases, additional requirements for the protection level of existing arresters (particularly gapless metal oxide arresters) are under consideration. In general, HEMP-related parameters, which are related to rapid changes in electromagnetic fields, voltage (u), and current (i) as a function of time, are of interest. For basic specifications, reference may be made to other relevant standards that are not limited to HEMP phenomena (see Annex E). Where these standards do not adequately address the requirements of modern electronic equipment, additional specifications may be specified based on or expanded upon non-HEMP-related standards.
