Introduction
GB/T 32398-2015 Standard Overview
This standard is one of the "Chinese Email Address" series of standards, which mainly stipulates the technical requirements for using SMTP extension to support Chinese email addresses on the Internet system. The standard is applicable to email address registration management agencies, service providers and software developers.
| Dimensions | Local-part | Domain-part | Header format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character encoding | Support UTF-8 encoding | Support IDNA standard (RFC 3490) | GB/T 32397 requirements |
| Format requirements | Allow Chinese characters and punctuation | Support Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) | Extended header fields |
| Compatibility | ACE encoding is required to be compatible with the ASCII system | Punycode conversion must be used | Support MIME structure extension |
Protocol details and technical implementation
SMTP extension framework
- The keyword value of the EHL O command is "SMTP UTF-8".
- The optional parameters of the MAIL and RCPT commands support UTF-8 encoding.
- The VRFY and EXPN commands return UTF-8 strings.
Chinese domain name processing
Both the local part and the domain name part of the email address must be processed according to the following rules:
- The local part supports UTF-8 encoding, but only for the part outside the ASCII character set.
- The domain name is converted to ACE format using Punycode (such as starting with xn--).
- The extension of the mail header field follows the technical requirements of GB/T 32397.
Error handling and compatibility
- If the SMTP server does not support the UTF-8 extension, the mail containing the Chinese mail header must be rejected.
- Response code 533 means "not allowed mailbox name"; response code 550 means "mailbox name is not available".
- Enhanced status code X.6.7 means "non-ASCII mailbox is not allowed".
Implementation suggestions
Server side
- Upgrade the SMTP service to support UTF-8 encoding and SMTP UTF-8 extension.
- Ensure compatibility with the ACE encoding conversion mechanism of the ASCII system.
- Optimize the mail header processing process to ensure compliance with GB/T32397 requirements.
Client
- Detect whether the SMTP server supports UTF-8 extension (through EHL O response).
- If not, provide alternative routing or conversion mechanisms (such as the rewrite strategy defined in RFC 4409).
- Ensure that the encoding method is correctly marked in the mail header to avoid compatibility issues.
