Introduction

1. Standard Overview

GB/T 33958—2017 "Steel Wire Rod for Submerged Arc Welding Wire of Pipeline Steel" standard specifies the brand, ordering content, size, shape, weight and allowable deviation, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, packaging, marking and quality certificate of steel wire rod for submerged arc welding wire of pipeline steel, and is applicable to steel wire rod for submerged arc welding wire of pipeline steel.

2. Comparison of standard frameworks

Standard dimensions GB/T 33958—2017 Related international standards Comparison of industry standards
Grade designation method H08MnMoTiBG, etc. AWS A5.17, JIS Z3351 Corresponding to GB/T 3429—2015
Chemical composition requirements C: ≤0.10%, Mn: 0.80~1.10%, etc. Meet API 5L requirements Consistent with ASTM A376
Mechanical properties Tensile strength ≥520MPa, cross-sectional reduction ≥40% Requirements for steel pipes of the same grade Higher than enterprise standard requirements

3. Interpretation of key technical points

3.1 Brand representation method

The brand consists of four parts: the first letter of the Chinese pinyin for "welding" (H), the average carbon content (C), the main alloying elements and "for pipeline steel" (G). For example: H08MnMoTiBG, where:

  • H - welding
  • 08 - average carbon content ≤0.10%
  • MnMoTiB - main alloying element
  • G - for pipeline steel

3.2 Chemical composition requirements

Table 1 lists the chemical composition requirements for each grade. The main controlled elements include carbon (C), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), titanium (Ti), boron (B), etc. Take H08MnMoTiBG as an example:

  • C: 0.04~0.10%
  • Mn: 1.40~1.80%
  • Mo: ≤0.10%
  • Ti: 0.01~0.12%
  • B: 0.002~0.008%

3.3 Mechanical properties requirements

Table 2 specifies the inspection items and test methods for wire rods, including tensile test, non-metallic inclusion detection and metallographic structure inspection:

Serial numberInspection itemSampling quantitySampling locationTest method
1Chemical composition1 piece/batchGB/T20066GB/T223 series
2Tensile test2 pieces/batchGB/T2975GB/T 228.1

3.4 Surface quality requirements

The surface of the wire rod should be smooth, without defects such as cracks and folds. The depth of local indentations and bulges should not exceed 0.10mm.

4. Implementation suggestions

  1. Purchasing stage: Clarify the order content, including product name, brand, nominal size and special requirements, to ensure that both the supply and demand parties reach an agreement on the quality standards.
  2. Production stage:Smelting and rolling should be carried out strictly in accordance with the chemical composition and process flow specified in the standard. It is recommended to use converter or electric furnace smelting, and control the final rolling temperature to ensure the mechanical properties.
  3. Inspection stage:Establish a complete quality inspection system and equip with necessary testing equipment (such as spark spectrometer, tensile testing machine, etc.) to ensure that the chemical composition and mechanical properties meet the standard requirements.
  4. Application stage:Select the appropriate brand of wire rod according to the welding process requirements, and refer to the comparison table in Appendix A to select the international general model to improve the quality of the weld.
