Application of slow-release available nitrogen (SAN)
Slow-release available nitrogen is generated by the reaction of urea-formaldehyde, such as urea-formaldehyde (UF/MU) is calculated as hot water-soluble nitrogen, isobutylene diurea (IBDU) and butylene diurea (CDU) are calculated as cold water insoluble nitrogen. This term is used in fertilizer labels to clarify the source of nutrients and guide farmers to use them correctly.
The practical meaning of activity coefficient (AI)
The activity coefficient indicates the efficiency of converting cold water insoluble nitrogen into available nitrogen, and the calculation formula is: AI = (CWIN - HWIN) × 100% / CWIN. A high AI value indicates that the fertilizer has a good conversion effect in the soil and improves crop absorption rate.
Quality requirements for urea-formaldehyde slow-release fertilizers
- Total nitrogen content: ≥36.0% for urea-formaldehyde products, ≥28.0% for isobutylene diurea and butylene diurea
- Particle size: Granular, strip, flake or powder, particle size requirement ≥90% (1.00mm~4.75mm)
- Moisture content:≤3.0%, powdered product ≤5.0%
Testing methods for urea-formaldehyde slow-release fertilizers
Testing includes indicators such as total nitrogen, urea nitrogen, and hot water soluble nitrogen. For example, when determining cold water insoluble nitrogen, the undissolved nitrogen is CWIN after extraction in a phosphate buffer solution at 25°C and pH7.5 for 15 minutes.
