GB/T 34782—2017 Standard Overview

This standard specifies the HPLC identification method for whether propolis contains poplar gum, and is applicable to the detection of poplar gum in propolis and propolis ethanol extracts.

Background of Standard Formulation

With the rapid development of the propolis market, adulteration and counterfeiting have occurred frequently. GB/T 34782—2017 came into being, aiming to accurately identify whether propolis contains poplar gum through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to ensure product quality.

Propolis: It is formed by the worker bees collecting resin and other plant secretions and mixing them with their maxillary gland and wax gland secretions.

Poplar Tree Gum: It comes from the buds, leaves or bark of the poplar plant, extracted with ethanol.

Case: The test results of a propolis sample showed that the content of salicin was 0.15 mg/g and the content of catechol was 0.25 mg/g, which met the standard and was judged to contain poplar gum.

Analysis of the Evolution of Standard Technology

Compared with traditional detection methods, this standard uses HPLC technology to significantly improve detection sensitivity and accuracy. The separation effect of target substances in complex matrices is ensured by optimizing the gradient elution program (see Appendix A).
