Introduction
GB/T 34814—2017 Standard Overview
The National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 34814—2017 "Methods for Monitoring and Evaluation of Grassland Meteorology" specifies the definition, items and methods of grassland meteorology monitoring and evaluation, and is applicable to meteorology monitoring and evaluation during the grassland growing season. This standard was proposed by the China Meteorological Administration, and the main drafting units include the National Meteorological Center, Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Bureau and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau.
Monitoring and evaluation framework
| Monitoring items | Core indicators | Calculation method | Evaluation level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meteorological conditions for grassland vegetation growth | Meteorological condition index for vegetation growth (Ii) | Quantitative calculation based on factors such as light, temperature, and water, see formula (1) | Favourable (Ii = 1.0), relatively favourable (0.9 ≤ Ii < 1.0), etc. |
| Grassland vegetation growth | Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) | See formula (3), based on remote sensing technology | very good (△NDVI ≥ 15), good (5 ≤ △NDVI < 15), etc. |
| Grassland vegetation coverage | Grassland vegetation coverage (GVCi) | See Appendix B, based on remote sensing estimation, visual estimation, etc. | High coverage (GVC ≥ 80%), relatively high coverage (60% ≤ GVC < 80%), etc. |
| Forage yield | Annual hay yield (FBi) | See Appendix C, based on aboveground biomass estimation and statistical model | High yield (FB ≥ 4000 kg/hm²), high yield (2000 ≤ FB < 4000 kg/hm²), etc. |
| Grassland ecological quality | Grassland ecological quality index (Qi) | See Appendix D, based on vegetation coverage and forage yield | Excellent (Q ≥ 80), good (60 ≤ Q < 80), etc. |
Background of standard formulation and analysis of technological evolution
Grassland is an important ecosystem, and its health directly affects animal husbandry and the ecological environment. GB/T 34814—2017 was formulated based on many years of research and practical experience, integrating multidisciplinary achievements such as meteorology, remote sensing, and ecological observation. As global climate change intensifies, grassland monitoring technology needs to continue to evolve. This standard provides technical support for the scientific assessment of grassland ecology through quantitative indicators and evaluation systems.
Implementation Suggestions
Practical Application Case: Forage Yield Estimation
The forage yield estimation method based on the aboveground biomass of grassland vegetation (ABMS) is combined with the edible forage ratio (f). The calculation formula is as shown in formula (C.1). The accuracy of the estimation results is ensured through dual verification by ground measurement and statistical model.
