Introduction

Interpretation of GB/T 35227-2017 National Standard of the People's Republic of China

Overview of the Standard

GB/T 35227-2017 "Specifications for Wind Direction and Speed in Ground Meteorological Observations" is a national standard of the People's Republic of China, which is used to guide the measurement and recording of wind direction and wind speed in ground meteorological observations. This standard applies to manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic observation methods, and specifies specific requirements for instrument installation, maintenance and data processing.

Explanation of Core Terms

Wind force: Refers to the intensity of wind, usually expressed in Beaufort wind scale, which is divided into 0 to 18 levels, each level corresponding to a different wind speed range and natural phenomenon characteristics.

Instantaneous wind speed: The wind speed at a certain moment, usually the average value of the previous 3 seconds in automatic observation.

Average wind direction: The average value of wind direction over a given period of time, expressed in degrees or azimuth.

Comparison of standard frameworks

Dimensions GB/T 35227—2017 International Meteorological Observation Standard (WMO) Comparison with the old standard
Wind direction recording method Supports both degree and azimuth symbol recording methods Adopts the internationally unified 8/16 azimuth symbol system The old standard only supports degree recording
Wind speed measurement accuracy Retain 1 decimal place, accurate to 0.1 m/s In line with international standards, adopt the same accuracy standard The old version accuracy is an integer
Observation time frequency Supports multiple frequencies such as hourly and minutely Follow WMO's global unified observation frequency The old standard is fixed at 4 times/day

Practical application examples of professional terms

For example, in actual observations, the wind force level can be judged by the Beaufort wind scale (Appendix A). When the wind speed is 7.0 m/s, the corresponding wind force level is level 5 (light wind). At this time, the signs of land objects include swaying small trees and small waves on the inland water surface.

Wind Force LevelNameWind Speed Range(m/s)

Standard Development Background and Technology Evolution Analysis

The formulation of GB/T 35227-2017 is based on many years of practical experience in meteorological observation and combined with the standard system of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Compared with the old version of the standard, the new version of the standard has achieved technical upgrades in the following aspects:

  • Introduced automatic observation technical specifications
  • Added multi-dimensional recording methods for wind direction and wind speed
  • Optimized instrument installation and maintenance requirements

Implementation recommendations

To ensure the effective implementation of the standard, it is recommended to take the following measures:

  1. Instrument selection and calibration: Ensure that the wind vane and wind speed sensor meet the accuracy requirements and calibrate them regularly.
  2. Observation environment optimization: Avoid interference from buildings or other obstacles on wind direction and wind speed measurement, and ensure that the sensor installation height meets the requirements of the specification (10m~12m).
  3. Data recording and processing: Strictly record the wind direction symbol and wind speed value in accordance with the standard requirements, and regularly check the timing error of the self-recording clock.
  4. Maintenance and training: Regularly check the operating status of the instrument, replace consumables (such as printing paper, pen) in a timely manner, and provide professional training to observers to ensure that they correctly understand and implement standard requirements.
