GB/T 35243—2017 "Test Method for Adsorption Performance of Free Formaldehyde Adsorption Materials in Artificial Boards and Their Products" is a standard developed for the performance test of free formaldehyde adsorption materials in artificial boards and their products. This standard specifies the determination method of the initial adsorption rate and unit adsorption amount of adsorption materials for formaldehyde, and is applicable to the adsorption performance evaluation of solid granular adsorption materials in the process of formaldehyde release from artificial boards and their products.

Technical Background and Significance

With the widespread application of artificial boards and their products in the fields of building decoration, furniture manufacturing, etc., the problem of formaldehyde pollution has become increasingly prominent. In order to meet this environmental health challenge, GB/T 35243—2017 standard came into being. The formulation of this standard is based on the following background:

  • Formaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant that has long-term harm to human health.
  • Artificial boards and their products will continuously release formaldehyde during production and use.
  • As an important means of controlling formaldehyde pollution, there is a lack of unified standards for the performance test methods of adsorbent materials.

Test Method Interpretation

1. Laboratory Condition Requirements

During the test, the laboratory must meet the temperature ($20\pm2^\circ \mathrm{C}$) and relative humidity ($(50\pm10)\%$). This ensures the stability of the experimental environment and avoids the influence of external factors on the test results.

2. Formaldehyde Release Source Preparation

Medium-density fiberboard was processed into specimens with a size of $400\mathrm{mm} \times 50\mathrm{mm} \times 9\mathrm{mm}$ and sealed with formaldehyde-free aluminum foil tape on all sides. The exposed area should be controlled at $1200\mathrm{cm^2}$ to ensure the consistency of formaldehyde release.

3. Preparation of adsorbent materials

The adsorbent materials need to be pretreated and placed in an air convection drying oven at $40^\circ \mathrm{C}$ for $24\mathrm{~h}$. They are then weighed and loaded into adsorption tubes, and non-woven fabrics are filled at both ends to ensure air tightness.

  1. Laboratory construction:It is recommended to configure a double test chamber device, a constant temperature water bath and a high-precision balance to ensure that the equipment meets the standard requirements.
  2. Staff training:Operators need to undergo professional training and master the entire process of formaldehyde release source preparation and adsorption material performance testing.
  3. Quality control:Instruments should be calibrated regularly, and the test data should be verified for parallelism and repeatability to ensure the accuracy of the results.
