Introduction

Interpretation of GB/T 36834—2018 Quarantine and Identification Methods for Bostrychoplites cornutus

1. Standard Overview

This standard GB/T 36834—2018 Quarantine and Identification Methods for Bostrychoplites cornutus was proposed and coordinated by the National Technical Committee for Plant Quarantine Standardization, and is applicable to the quarantine and identification of Bostrychoplites cornutus. The standard covers scope, term definitions, identification characteristics and laboratory testing procedures.

Chapters Main contents
Chapter 1 Scope of application and normative references
Chapter 2 Terms and definitions (such as body length, pronotum, elytra slope, etc.)
Chapter 3 Basic information and taxonomic status

2. Method principle and laboratory identification process

The quarantine identification of the horn-chest borer is based on its damage, biological characteristics and transmission mode. The morphological characteristics of the adult (such as head, pronotum, elytra, etc.) are the main basis for identification.

Case Study: On-site Quarantine and Laboratory Testing

According to the standard requirements, on-site quarantine should focus on checking logs, boards and wood packaging to observe insect holes and pest traces. When suspicious samples are found, morphological analysis should be performed using a stereomicroscope and a micrometer.

3. Laboratory Identification and Standard Comparison

Laboratory identification is based on the identification characteristics of the Bostrichidae family, including antenna structure, pronotum morphology and elytra surface characteristics. The difference between Bostrichidae and other similar species can be distinguished by the morphological comparison chart in Appendix C.

Species characteristics Hornothoracic borer Large hornothoracic borer
Pronotum morphology U-shaped notch V-shaped notch
Antennal club characteristics Broad and flat, the last segment is elliptical Longitudinal ridges on elytra Obvious longitudinal ridges Inconspicuous longitudinal ridges

4. Implementation Suggestions

To ensure the accuracy of quarantine work, the following measures are recommended:

  • Strengthen port quarantine forces and equip them with professional instruments (such as stereo microscopes and micrometers)
  • Carry out standard training regularly to improve the professional capabilities of law enforcement personnel
  • Establish standardized laboratories to ensure that the identification process complies with technical specifications
