Introduction

Overview of the Standard for the Assessment Method of the Self-care Ability of People with Functional Disabilities

GB/T 37103—2018 "The Assessment Method of the Self-care Ability of People with Functional Disabilities" is China's first national standard for the assessment of the daily living activities of people with functional disabilities. This standard fills the gap in this field in China and provides a scientific and standardized assessment basis for rehabilitation service practitioners, family members and society.

Background of Standard Formulation

For a long time, the assessment of the daily living ability of people with functional disabilities in China has mainly referred to foreign scales (such as the Barthel Index), which have cultural differences and applicability issues. This standard combines China's actual needs and innovatively proposes an assessment system based on three levels: bedside, home and community.

Core framework and clause interpretation

1. Assessment content

Assessment level Scope of activity Assessment focus
ADL in bed Basic living ability (toilet, eating, entertainment) Passive activities and a small amount of active participation
ADL at home Daily living skills (toilet, cleaning, housework) Partial independent completion
ADL in the community Social participation ability (shopping, community activities) Independent living and degree of integration

For example, in home ADL, toileting ability is divided into three levels: needing full assistance to completely independent. This classification helps to accurately assess and formulate personalized rehabilitation plans.

2. Assessment method and application of results

The standard stipulates a six-level classification system for self-care ability based on scores:

  • No self-care at all (ADL in bed, 1-3 points): can only complete a very small number of activities.
  • Basically no self-care (ADL in bed and home, 4-6 points): can complete some tasks under supervision.
  • Most self-care (ADL in home, 7-9 points): can independently complete most daily activities.
  • Fully self-care (ADL in community, 10-15 points): can independently participate in social activities.

Implementation Suggestions

To ensure the effective implementation of the standard, it is recommended that:

  1. Systematic training be provided to rehabilitation practitioners to ensure the correct understanding and application of the standard.
  2. Develop scenario simulation training modules based on actual cases to improve the accuracy of assessment.
  3. Establish a cross-departmental collaboration mechanism to promote the widespread application of the standard in the fields of civil affairs, medical care and elderly care.
