3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1
vehicle type

a category of power-driven vehicles which do not differ in such essential respects as:

a) the length and width of vehicles, in so far as they have a negative effect on the performance prescribed in this standard;

b) the structure, dimensions, lines and material of the side wall of passenger compartment, in so far as they have a negative effect on the performance prescribed in this standard;

c) the lines and inside dimensions of the passenger compartment and the type of protective system, in so far as they have a negative effect on the performance prescribed in this standard;

d) the sitting of the engine (front, rear or centre);

e) the unladen mass , in so far as they have a negative effect on the performance prescribed in this standard;

f) the optional arrangements and interior fittings in so far as they have a negative effect on the performance prescribed in this standard;

g) the type of front seats and position of R point in so far as they have a negative effect on the performance prescribed in this standard.

3.2
passenger compartment

space for occupant accommodation, bounded by the roof, floor, side walls, doors, outside glazing and front bulkhead and the rear compartment bulkhead, and the rear-seat back support

3.3
capacity of the fuel tank

fuel-tank capacity as specified by the manufacturer of the vehicle

3.4
transverse plane

vertical plane perpendicular to the median longitudinal vertical plane of the vehicle

3.5
protective system

devices intended to restrain and/or protect occupants

3.6
type of protective system

a category of protective devices which do not differ in such essential respects as their:

a) technology;

b) geometry;

c) constituent materials.

3.7
unladen mass

mass of the vehicle in running order without driver, passengers or load, but with the fuel tank filled to 90% of its capacity and engine oil and other liquids at the highest level and the usual set of tools and spare tyres on board, where applicable

3.8
rated cargo and luggage mass

mass subtracting unladen mass and rated occupants mass from maximum allowable mass

Note: The rated occupants mass is rated number of persons multiplied by 68 kg.

3.9
reference mass

unladen mass of vehicle plus the mass of the side impact dummy and 136 kg or rated cargo and luggage mass (whichever is smaller)

Note: The side impact dummy (or equivalent) is placed in the front seat on the impact side. Load of 136 kg or rated cargo and luggage is placed at the center of the luggage bearing area and the position corresponding to the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle.

3.10
back door

door (or door system) located at the rear of the vehicle, which is used for occupants to get on and off or loading and unloading cargos, but excluding the trunk and such doors (or windows) that are completely made of inner glass with door locking system directly connected to glass door (window)

3.11
latch

components installed in the door and engaged with the latch on the door pole to keep the door latched

3.12
striker

components installed on door pole and engaged with the latch to keep the door latched

3.13
door hinges

assembly of components connected to the door and body, capable of rotating around the same axis and combined with each other

3.14
fully latched position

the position where the latch and striker are engaged when the door is fully closed

3.15
secondary latched position

the position where the latch and striker are engaged when the door is not fully closed

3.16
latched

any situation that the door lock is engaged in any of the following circumstances: fully latched position, secondary latched position or their middle position

3.17
pitch angle

angle between fixed straight line which connects two reference points on the left front or right front sills (if applicable) and the horizontal plane (Figure 1)

Figure 1 Schematic diagram of linear connection of two reference points on the left sill

3.18
roll angle

angle between fixed straight line which connects two reference points on both sides of longitudinal centerline of the vehicle and front or rear plane of vehicle body (if applicable) and the horizontal plane (Figure 2)

Figure 2 Schematic diagram of linear connection of two reference points
on the rear part of body

3.19
unladen attitude

attitude corresponding to pitch angle and roll angle of test vehicle at the unladen mass when the test vehicle is placed on a horizontal plane and all tyres are inflated to the pressure specified by the manufacturer

3.20
reference attitude

attitude corresponding to pitch angle and roll angle of test vehicle at the reference mass when the test vehicle is placed on a horizontal plane and all tyres are inflated to the pressure specified by the manufacturer

3.21
test attitude

attitude corresponding to the pitch angle and roll angle of the test vehicle that will collide with the rigid pole
