Measurement principle and technical characteristics
The standard adopts the single-cylinder rotational viscometer to measure the viscosity through the torque generated by the constant rotation of the rotor in the liquid. The key technical parameters include:
- Measuring range: 0.02-60,000Pa·s (covering low-viscosity resins to high-viscosity melts)
- Fluid type: Newtonian/non-Newtonian fluid (shear rate must be specified)
- Temperature control: ±0.2℃ constant temperature accuracy (20-100℃ gradient recommended)

Actual Application Case
When measuring epoxy resin, an R-type viscometer with an R3 rotor was selected. The viscosity was measured at a speed of 20r/min and was 4.25Pa·s, which meets the standard requirement of 45-95% of the measuring range.
Key control points of operation
- Bubble elimination: The rotor is immersed at a 45° angle and ultrasonically degassed
- Immersion depth: The rotor mark line must be completely immersed (>10mm from the bottom of the cup)
- Stable reading: Thixotropic samples need to record the time-viscosity curve
Technology evolution analysis
Compared with the old version of the standard, GB/T40280-2021 has the following major improvements:
- Newly added automated measurement requirements for digital viscometer
- Clarified the shear rate dependence of non-Newtonian fluids
- Extended high temperature test to 100°C (requires the use of a telescopic sleeve)
