Introduction

Standard Framework and Technology Evolution

As my country's first national standard for companion animal sterilization surgery, GB/T40449-2021 fills the gap in technical operation specifications in the field of pet medicine. The standard was formulated by the National Companion Animal Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC541) and integrates the clinical practice experience of 9 institutions including the Beijing Small Animal Diagnosis and Treatment Industry Association.

Definition of core terms

TermsDefinitionScope of surgery
Neuter and neuter male dogs/catsOrchiectomyScrotal or midline abdominal incision
Neuter and neuter female dogs/catsOvariectomyMidline abdominal incision behind the umbilicus
Management of cryptorchidismRequires special positioning for removalIncluded in the mandatory preoperative inspection items

Key points of preoperative preparation

Four elements of health check: medical history investigation + physiological index detection + blood test + testicular palpation. The fasting time of young animals is shortened to 4-8 hours, reflecting the principle of age-differentiated treatment.

Instrument sterilization requirements: Clearly lists the disinfection standards for 11 types of surgical instruments, including easily overlooked instruments such as towel forceps.

Comparison of surgical differences between male dogs and cats

ParametersMale catsMale dogs
Incision locationBottom of scrotumAnterior ventral midline of scrotum
Spermatic cord managementDouble ligation + self-knotting methodConventional double ligation
Wound suturingOptionalMust suturing

Main surgical techniques for female dogs and cats

Incision positioning: The incision range for dogs is 3-10cm, while for cats it is strictly controlled at 0.5-3cm, reflecting the anatomical differences of species. The uterine artery and vein need to be double ligated to prevent bleeding.

Implementation recommendations

  1. Establish a standardized surgical kit to ensure that all instruments are available
  2. Laparoscopy is recommended for cases of cryptorchidism
  3. Use an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking and biting within 3 days after surgery
  4. Regular follow-up visits to monitor wound healing
