Standard Background and Scope of Application

This standard, as a supplement to the toy safety series standards, establishes detection methods for 9 carcinogenic aromatic amines that may migrate from toy materials such as textiles, leather, and wood. Its technical framework refers to the EN 71-9/10/11 series of EU standards, filling the gap in my country's standards for the detection of chemical hazards in toys.

Characteristics of 9 target compounds

Major concern substances: Benzidine (CAS 92-87-5) is a Class I carcinogen, and its detection requires special attention to the abundance ratio of 184m/z quantitative ion and 183/185 qualitative ion (100:12:10). In actual testing, 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine was detected in leather colorant samples, which was traced back to the decomposition of azo dyes.


Implementation recommendations

  1. Sample preparation stage: When drilling holes for sampling wood materials, ensure that the drill bit is clean to avoid sample degradation caused by high temperature
  2. Method development and verification: It is recommended that laboratories conduct additional verification on different types of matrix materials (such as elastomers, coatings, etc.)
  3. Quality control: One spiked recovery sample should be inserted for every 20 samples to monitor system stability

Technology evolution analysis

Compared with the 2018 draft for comments, the main improvements of the 2025 version include: clarifying the pretreatment scheme for clay samples, optimizing the GC-MS heating program (adding a 5-minute final temperature hold), and supplementing the characteristic ion abundance ratio judgment standard. These revisions have increased the adaptability of the method by more than 30%.
