1 Scope

This part of GB/T 7962 specifies the test method, test steps and data processing for the stress birefringence of colourless optical glass.

This part is applicable to testing the stress birefringence of colourless optical glass.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this part, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1
stress birefringence
optical glass is an isotropous substance; it will show optical anisotropy under stress, and a beam of polarized light in vertical incidence will be decomposed into two polarized light beams with mutually perpendicular vibration directions and different propagation velocities along the two principal stress directions in the glass, and such birefringence caused by stress is called stress birefringence

3.2
optical path difference
δ
polarized light will produce birefringence when passing through the glass under stress, optical path difference is generated due to different optical paths of two polarized light beams when passing through the glass caused by different propagation velocities
