Introduction

Update of the standard for the determination of the demulsification performance of lubricating oils: Interpretation of GB/T 8022—2019

1. Overview of the standard

GB/T 8022—2019 "Determination of the demulsification performance of lubricating oils" replaces the old version GB/T 8022—1987, and is mainly applicable to the demulsification performance test of high and medium viscosity lubricating oils.

The new standard adds method classification, distinguishing the sample determination process without extreme pressure agents (Method A) and with extreme pressure agents (Method B), which significantly improves the detection accuracy and safety.

2. Comparison of major technical changes

Items Old standard GB/T 8022—1987 New standard GB/T 8022—2019
Method classification - Newly added method A (without extreme pressure agent) and method B (with extreme pressure agent)
Sample volume Not clearly distinguished Method A: 405 mL oil sample + 45 mL secondary water; Method B: 360 mL oil sample + 90 mL secondary water
Temperature control Unspecified centrifugation temperature requirements Clearly required that the centrifugation process be maintained at 60°C ±1°C to ensure detection accuracy
Extreme pressure agent treatment Not involved Added new extreme pressure agent sample test content to ensure more comprehensive experimental results

3. Comparison and application of measurement methods

Separatory funnel and centrifuge tube are core instruments, and their specifications and usage requirements are further refined in the new standard. For example, the minimum scale of the separatory funnel has been optimized from the original 5 mL to a finer 0.05 mL, which significantly improves the measurement accuracy.

Case Study: Determination of Lubricating Oil with Extreme Pressure Agents

For a high-viscosity lubricating oil sample containing extreme pressure agents, when tested using Method B, the volume of separated water was 90 mL and the volume of emulsion was 18 mL. The percentage of water in the oil was calculated as X = (V/50) × 100, where V is the volume of visible water in the centrifuge tube. This case demonstrates the superiority of the new standard in handling complex samples.

4. Implementation Suggestions

Laboratories should strictly follow the requirements of the new standard and update equipment and operating procedures. Suggestions:

  • Equipped with instruments that meet the new standard, such as a precisely controlled constant temperature bath and a high-performance centrifuge.
  • Strengthen the training of laboratory personnel to ensure that the differences and applicable scenarios of Method A and Method B are correctly understood.
  • Regularly calibrate equipment, especially the scale accuracy of separatory funnels and centrifuge tubes.
