Scope

This standard deals with certain hazardous materials, operations and equipment, but it is not intended to make recommendations on all safety issues related to this. Therefore, users should establish appropriate safety and protective measures and determine the applicability of relevant regulatory limitations before applying this standard. This standard specifies two methods for the determination of n-pentane insolubles and toluene insolubles in lubricating oils in use. Method A of this standard is applicable to the determination of n-pentane insolubles and toluene insolubles in lubricating oil without coagulant. This method uses centrifugation to separate the insoluble matter in the oil-solvent mixture. Method B of this standard is applicable to in-service lubricating oils containing detergent and dispersants, to determine the n-pentane insolubles after coagulation and toluene insolubles after coagulation with coagulation added. In addition to the substances separated by method A, this method can also separate some fine substances that may be suspended in the oil.
