Scope

This standard specifies the determination methods for the following rope properties: - linear density; - lay length; - braid lay length; - elongation; - breaking strength. The first three properties (linear density, lay length and braid lay length) are measured values of the rope under a specific tension, which is called pre-tension, see Appendix A for details. Elongation is the length increment when the tension on the rope increases from the initial value (pretension) to 50% of the rated minimum breaking strength of the rope. The breaking strength is the maximum load recorded (or reached) during the breaking test of the sample on a tensile testing machine in which the moving parts move at a constant speed. The breaking strength values listed in the rope specification tables are valid only when using a testing machine of the type described above. When it is not possible to test the entire rope, the method described in Appendix B can be used for the test with the agreement of all parties concerned. At the request of the customer, this standard also provides methods for determining the water resistance, lubricating oil and treatment agent content and heat setting treatment of ropes.
