Key technical points

Activity concentration determination requires the use of equipment such as high purity germanium gamma spectrometer for detection. When the activity is lower than 1E+02 Bq/kg, the indirect inference method can be considered. Mixed nuclides must meet the superposition formula of ∑(Ci/Cui)≤1.


Analysis of implementation difficulties

Case: A laboratory disposes of mixed waste containing Tc-99 (1E+05 Bq/kg) and Co-60 (5E+03 Bq/kg). According to Table A.2, the clearance levels are 1E+04 Bq/kg and 1E+01 Bq/kg respectively. Therefore, (1E+05/1E+04)+(5E+03/1E+01)=10+500=510>1, and it is determined to be radioactive waste.

Compared with GB 14500-2002, the innovations of this standard include:
1. Clarify the special management requirements for small-batch wastes in tons
2. Add a new classification for extremely short-lived wastes (half-life < 100 days)
3. Refine the graded protection system for temporary storage sites
