Scope

This standard applies to pressure relief and steam pressure reduction systems. Information is provided to assist in the selection of the most suitable pressure relief and pressure relief system for various installations in the event of hazardous conditions. The purpose of this standard is to supplement the practices specified in API RP 520 I Dimensioning, Selection and Installation of Refinery Pressure Relief Devices Part 1 Dimensioning and Selection (Fifth Edition) in order to establish a design basis. This standard provides guidance for analyzing the main causes of overpressure, determining individual release quantities, and selecting and designing treatment systems such as vessels, flares, and vent towers. Pipeline information related to the pressure relief system is provided in 5.4.1 of this standard. However, the actual pipeline should be designed in accordance with ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) B31.3 or other applicable codes. Health hazards may be associated with the operation of pressure relief equipment. Discussion of special risks is beyond the scope of this standard.
