Scope

1.1.1 This standard specifies the minimum requirements for lubricated or unlubricated cylinder reciprocating compressors and their drives used in the petroleum, chemical and natural gas industries for conveying process air or gases. This standard applies to compressors operating at medium and low speeds and under severe conditions. It also applies to lubrication systems, controls, instrumentation, interstage coolers, aftercoolers, buffers and other auxiliary devices. This standard does not apply to the following compressors: a) Compressors driven by an integral gas engine whose piston is a single-acting cylinder type (motorcycle type) and also functions as a crosshead. b) Instrument air or factory air compressor with outlet pressure equal to or lower than 9 bar (125 psi) gauge pressure. Also not suitable for gas engines and steam driven machines. 1.1.2 Requirements for skid-mounted complete reciprocating general and instrument air compressors are included in API Std 680.
