Scope

The purpose of this series of standards is to facilitate the manipulation and exchange of documents. In the context of this series of standards, documents are considered to be items such as memorandums, letters, invoices, forms and reports, which may also contain pictures and tabular material. Content elements used in a document may contain graphic characters, raster graphic elements, and geometric graphic elements, all of which may be included in one document. Note: This series of standards is designed to allow for extension to include spreadsheets and additional types of content such as video. In addition to the content types defined in this series of standards, ODA also provides the potential to include arbitrary content types in documents. This series of standards is applicable to file exchange for data communication or storage media exchange. This series of standards provides for the exchange of documents for either or both of the following purposes: - allowing visualization as intended by the originator; - allowing processing such as editing and formatting changes. The combination of documents in an exchange can be in several forms: - a formatted form allowing the presentation of the documents; - a processable form allowing the manipulation of the documents; - a formatted processable form allowing the presentation and manipulation of the documents. This series of standards also specifies the exchange of ODA information structures used to process the documents being exchanged. This standard: --Describes the abstract interface that supports ODA file manipulation; --In order to facilitate the processing of ODA files and support application systems, define the operations applicable to file segments.
