1 Scope

This part specifies the test methods and equipment for the demulsibility of gasoline detergent.

This part is applicable to the evaluation of demulsibility of gasoline detergent.

2 Normative references

The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part. For dated references, subsequent amendments to (excluding correction to), or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this part are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document applies.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this part, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1
film
thin, translucent layer that does not adhere to the wall of the glass cylinder

3.2
lace
fibers thicker than fine shreds, or more than 10% of fibers connected together, or both

3.3
loose lace or slight scum, or both
assessment that gasoline/buffer solution interface covers more than 10%, but less than 50% of the lace or scum, and the lace or scum does not enter the two layers

scum
layer thicker than the film or that adheres to the wall of the glass cylinder, or both

3.5
shred
10% or less of fine fibers connected with each other

3.6
shred, lace or film or scum at interface
assessment that fuel/buffer solution interface contains more than 50% clear bubbles or some but less than 10% of shred, lace, film or scum

tight lace or heavy scum, or both
assessment that gasoline/buffer solution interface covers more than 50% of the lace or scum, or both, which has entered any layer of the two layer or formed emulsion or both

water reaction interface conditions rating
qualitative assessment of the tendency of water and gasoline mixture to form interfacial film or sediment

3.9
water reaction separation rating
qualitative assessment of the tendency of emulsification and/or precipitation in the oil layer and water layer in the glass cylinder

water reaction volume change
qualitative indication of the presence of water-soluble components in gasoline
