Scope
This standard specifies the test methods and conditions for ignition systems of internal combustion engines powered by batteries and ignited by spark plugs. It is difficult to guarantee the repeatability of the measurement through the spark gap in the air, so two methods for calculating the output energy of the system are given. Method A: Test energy using a spark gap (test setup A). The output energy obtained by this method is called spark energy Esp. Method B: Test energy using a zener diode set (test setup B). The output energy obtained by this method is called Zener discharge energy Ezd. Method B is suitable for the comparison test of the ignition coil and the current cut-off system, and is not suitable for the alternating spark current system. This standard applies to the ignition systems of M, N, and L motor vehicles.
