Introduction

Standard Overview and Technical Background

GB/T 33376-2016 is the first national standard in my country to systematically regulate the terminology of optical functional films. It was proposed by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Optical Functional Film Materials. The standard was issued on December 30, 2016 and officially implemented on April 1, 2017.

Terminology Architecture

ClassificationNumber of TermsTypical Terms

Performance Index 50 Items Birefringence, haze, pencil hardness

Core term analysis

Key material definition

Polarizer (2.1.37): A composite optical film that converts natural light into polarized light. Its core structure is PVA film + double TAC film. It is widely used in LCD panels.

Hardened film (2.1.50): A functional film that forms a hard coating on the surface of the base film through a light/heat curing process. Its surface hardness can reach more than 3H.

Typical defect terms

Dark spots (2.2.1): commonly known as watermarks, appearing as irregular color spots, mostly caused by uneven coating process

Orange peel texture (2.2.19): an uneven surface defect similar to orange peel, related to the leveling of the coating

Technology evolution analysis

The standard reflects the three major development trends of optical thin film technology:

  1. Multifunctional integration: such as electromagnetic shielding film (2.1.12), which has both light transmission and electromagnetic protection functions
  2. Precision control: New advanced process terms such as asynchronous stretching (2.3.44)
  3. Performance quantification: Improve the standardized definition of optical parameters such as birefringence (2.4.107)

Implementation Suggestions

1. Manufacturers should establish a terminology comparison table to unify the technical terms used in R&D, production and quality inspection.

2. Testing agencies should strictly distinguish similar terms, such as the difference between haze (2.4.12/2.4.121) and surface haze.

3. It is recommended to develop English and Japanese versions of the terms to promote international technical exchanges.
