Introduction

GB/T 33796—2017 In-depth interpretation of general technical requirements for thermoplastic starch

Background and significance of standard formulation

Thermoplastic starch is a material with thermoplastic processability formed by physical or chemical modification with natural starch as the main raw material. With the increasing global attention to environmental issues, the demand for degradable materials has risen sharply. As an important bio-based material, thermoplastic starch has been widely used in packaging, film, tableware and other fields.

The formulation of GB/T 33796—2017 fills the gap in the domestic technical requirements for thermoplastic starch, provides a unified technical standard for production, sales and application, and helps promote the healthy development of bio-based materials, reduce dependence on traditional plastics, and promote the realization of sustainable development goals.

Comparative Analysis of Standard Frameworks

Dimensions GB/T 33796—2017 International Comparison (ISO) Other Domestic Standards
Definition of Terms Clear definition of thermoplastic starch Consistent with some terms in ISO 15985:2004 This is the first time it has been proposed in China
Technical Indicators Appearance, physical properties, biodegradability, etc. Reference to international standard test methods Complementary to QB/T 4012—2010
Test methods Citing multiple domestic and international standards Ensuring data consistency Cooperating with GB/T 3682 and other standards

Interpretation of key technical requirements

Physical performance requirements

Table 1 specifies the physical performance indicators of thermoplastic starch in detail, including appearance, number of black and color particles, density deviation, melt mass flow rate deviation, flow temperature deviation and ash content.

Take melt mass flow rate deviation as an example, this indicator reflects the processing performance of the material. The test method is based on GB/T3682-2000, and uses thermoplastic melt mass flow rate tester for measurement to ensure process consistency during the production process.

Biodegradation Performance Requirements

Biodegradation performance is an optional indicator and needs to be tested only when the product claims to be biodegradable. The test methods include GB/T19277.1, GB/T19276.1 and other standards, and are evaluated using biodegradation test equipment.

Through these tests, the decomposition ability of the product under specific conditions can be ensured, providing a scientific basis for the application of green materials.

Implementation Suggestions and Precautions

Case Study: Determination of Starch Content

In actual production, the determination of starch content is one of the key indicators. It is recommended to use the thermogravimetric method (TG) in QB/T2957-2008 for testing. This method uses a thermogravimetric analyzer to heat the sample to 600°C and measure the mass percentage of the remaining ash.

Case: A company used this method to test its thermoplastic starch products and found that the ash content was 0.8%, which met the standard requirements (≤1%).
