Scope

This standard specifies the test method for the resistance to intergranular corrosion of solution heat-treated aluminum alloys without a protective layer. The susceptibility of solution heat-treated aluminum alloys to intergranular corrosion is a function of the alloy's chemical composition, production method, solution heat treatment, quenching treatment, and precipitation hardening (aging) treatment. Under natural aging conditions, the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion of solution heat-treated aluminum alloys is mainly a function of the cooling rate during quenching in the critical temperature range. This standard applies to cast and wrought heat-treated aluminum alloys for castings, forgings, plates, sheets, profiles, and semi-finished or finished parts. It is suitable for grade evaluation of alloys of different grades and thicknesses and detection of material heat treatment quality based on different chemical compositions and other factors. The test results give information to determine the resistance of the material to intergranular corrosion and the quality of the heat treatment. The test results are not absolute as they are not applicable to all service environments. These test results are more suitable for comparing the intergranular corrosion resistance of solution heat-treated aluminum alloys at different heat treatment temperatures.
