Standard background and technical evolution analysis

Since its release, this standard GB/T 3854—2017 has replaced the previous version GB/T3854—2005. This standard mainly specifies the method of using the Barcol hardness tester to test the surface hardness of reinforced rigid plastics and their products.

Testing Instrument and Operating Specifications

As the core instrument, the Barcol Hardness Tester consists of key components such as the indicator, spindle, and load adjustment screw. The operating steps are as follows:

  1. Calibration Steps: - Full scale calibration: Ensure that the meter reading is 100. - Sample value calibration: Test the attached high and low hardness sheets and adjust the load screw to meet the requirements.
  2. Testing Procedure: - Place the specimen on a hard support surface. - With the indenter perpendicular to the specimen surface, apply uniform pressure until the maximum reading is reached.

Test result calculation and report

Barcol hardness calculation method:

  • Single test value: $x_{1}, x_{2}, x_{3}, \cdots, x_{n}$
  • Calculate the arithmetic mean $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{X}}$, standard deviation $S$ and coefficient of dispersion $C_{\mathrm{v}}$, and keep two significant figures.

Application Case

In an automotive parts manufacturer, the hardness of reinforced plastic housings was tested using the GB/T 3854-2017 standard. At least 10 tests were performed to ensure data accuracy, and the final Barcol hardness value was calculated to be 65.
