Method of ultrasonic inspection for wrought titanium and titanium alloy products

1 Scope

This standard specifies the principle, test conditions, instruments and equipment, samples, reference blocks, test procedures, evaluation of test results, testing records and reports regarding the ultrasonic inspection for wrought titanium and titanium alloy products.

This standard is applicable to ultrasonic inspection for wrought titanium and titanium alloy products with the cross-section thickness falling in the range of 6 mm to 500 mm, and it may serve as a reference for wrought titanium and titanium alloy products of other specifications.

2 Normative references

The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.

GB/T 9445 Non-destructive testing - Qualification and certification of personnel
JB/T 10061 Commonly used specification for A-mode ultrasonic flaw detector using pulse echo technique

3 Principle

The ultrasonic waves generated by the sound source enter the workpiece under testing and propagate forward in a certain direction and at a certain speed. When encountering interfaces with different acoustic impedance on both sides, some ultrasonic waves are reflected, and then received, processed and analyzed by the testing equipment to assess whether there is any flaw in the workpiece and the characteristics of the flaw (if any). It is mainly used to detect internal flaws of wrought titanium and titanium alloy products, such as cracks, pores, porosity and other discontinuities exposed or not exposed to the surface.

4 Test conditions

4.1 The workplace shall be free from strong electromagnetic interference and kept clean. Avoid damaging the testing conditions due to pollution by dust and foreign sundries.

4.2 The testing personnel shall receive training and appraisal for technical qualification in accordance with relevant requirements in GB/T 9445 or other applicable standards, and obtain a Grade I or above qualification of non-destructive testing personnel, and those who sign, issue and interpret the testing reports shall possess Grade II or above qualification of non-destructive testing personnel.
