Introduction

Technical background of the standard

This standard, as a technical specification for customs industry testing, establishes a quantitative analysis method based on rapid preparative chromatography to meet the separation requirements of mineral oil and additives in petroleum lubricants. As the types of lubricant additives become increasingly complex, the traditional weight method can no longer meet the requirements for accurate separation. This standard fills the technical gap in the industry.

Principle and scope of application of the method

Technical elements Parameter requirements Precautions
Separation principle Silica gel/alumina composite column adsorption additive Not applicable to poly-alpha olefin base oil
Mobile phase Petroleum ether (60-90℃) Requires recovery and treatment
Detection range Mineral oil content>60% Requires secondary verification

Key instrument configuration

The standard requires the use of a rapid preparative chromatograph with a UV detector, and its core parameters include:

  • Flow rate range: 0-200 mL/min
  • Column sleeve capacity: 50g (1:1 silica gel/alumina filling)
  • The matching rotary evaporator needs to maintain 80-90℃/70-80kPa

In actual applications, the Guangzhou Customs Laboratory found that when the additive content exceeds 30%, it is recommended to reduce the elution flow rate to 80 mL/min to improve the separation.

Precision control requirements

The standard stipulates that repeatability deviation ≤1% and reproducibility deviation ≤2%. To achieve this accuracy, please note:

  1. Constant weight operation requires the dryer equilibrium time to be ≥30 minutes
  2. The UV absorption threshold is set to 40% of the peak value as the elution endpoint
  3. Mineral oil content must be retested in the range of 60-70%

Implementation suggestions

For the 15 types of adsorbable additives listed in Appendix A (such as dialkyl dithiophosphates, silicone oil, etc.), it is recommended that laboratories:

  • Establish an additive database corresponding to UV characteristic peaks
  • Extend the elution time by 20% for the composite additive system
  • Regularly verify the column efficiency with standard oil samples
