Scope

This standard provides safety protection for personnel working on or around oil well pumping units. a) These safety protection measures should be able to prevent personal injuries caused by people accidentally approaching, falling, slipping, losing their footing or other similar actions and coming into contact with the moving parts of the pumping unit. Safety precautions should also prevent personal injury due to normal or possible damage to parts. b) Workers who are expected to be at risk due to being close to the moving parts of the pumping unit should be adults who are able-bodied and able to complete their work effectively. They should be of normal intelligence, behave in a steady and cautious manner, and be aware of potential dangers to which they are exposed. The general public will not enter the location of the pumping unit. However, pumping units are often installed in rural and relatively remote privately leased mining areas, where there is a risk of intrusion by the public. c) Safety barriers should be set up for oil pumping units that are close to residential areas and are unattended. For example, a completely enclosed and locked protective ring can be provided [see (1) of a] in 4.3].
