Introduction
Background of Standard Revision and Technological Evolution
YY/T 0625-2016, as the core standard in the field of dental orthodontics in my country, replaced the 2008 version and achieved three major technical upgrades: scientific measurement units (bending stiffness unit changed to N/mm), improved parameter accuracy (austenite transformation temperature accuracy ±1℃), and optimized test methods (elastic modulus determination changed to force-displacement curve). This standard revision adopts ISO 15841:2006 international standard, and adds localized content such as the bending stiffness curve diagram of the type orthodontic wire in combination with Chinese clinical practice.
Analysis of core technical requirements
| Performance indicators | I-type orthodontic wire | Type II orthodontic wire | Test methods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elastic behavior | Linear elasticity (<50℃) | Non-linear elasticity (<50℃) | Three-point bending test |
| Key parameters | Elastic modulus, 0.2% yield strength | 3.0/2.0/1.0/0.5mm deflection force value | ISO 6892 tensile test |
| Temperature requirements | Room temperature (23±2)℃ | 36±1℃ | DSC differential scanning calorimetry |
Key test methods
Austenite transformation temperature determination
Use a differential scanning calorimeter with a calibration accuracy of 1℃ and test at a heating rate of 10℃/min. As shown in Figure 2, the Af temperature is determined by the tangent line of the inflection point on the high temperature side of the curve. The 2016 version increases the accuracy requirement from ±2℃ to ±1℃.
Bending stiffness test
Three-point bending method (span 10mm, indenter radius 0.10±0.05mm):
- Type I: Measure the yield bending force at 0.1mm permanent deformation
- Type II: Record 3.0/2.0/1.0/0.5mm deflection force value curve
Clinical application recommendations
- Material selection: Type I is suitable for cases requiring stable correction force, and Type II is suitable for complex cases requiring temperature-responsive correction
- Nickel element warning: The new standard requires that products containing harmful elements such as nickel and platinum must be clearly marked with warning symbols
- Dimension control: The cross-sectional dimension tolerance is changed from ±0.01mm to 0.01mm. Retesting is recommended before clinical use.
Key points for implementation of the standard
Manufacturers need to clearly indicate in the packaging label:
1) Orthodontic wire type and heat treatment process
2) Alloy composition (all elements with a content ≥ 0.1%)
3) Mechanical performance parameters and Af temperature
4) Warning label for harmful elements (nickel-containing products must be specially marked)
